âHey. I was beginning to wonder if you girls were still alive up there,â Harper said as Sheila and Tyra made their way downstairs and into the kitchen.
Sheila smiled tiredly at her motherâs husband while Tyra bounded towards him and slung her arms around his shoulders.
âIt. Smells. Delicious. Coffee?â Tyra asked Harper as he scrambled the eggs. âWhat? Why are you looking at me like that?â Tyra asked him, letting her hands slip from his shoulders and taking a step back.
âThatâs what â you know, never mind. Itâs nothing. I wasnât sure if you guys drank coffee or not, so I didnât make any.â
The back of Tyraâs hand flew to her forehead, and she cried out in mock anguish.
Sheila eyed the goofy show her best friend was putting on. She knew exactly what Harper was about to say: the way she asked that question sounded just like her mother â that was always the first thing she asked when someone else was doing the cooking. It was a creepy coincidence. She watched the two interact as she tried to remember if she ever saw Tyra drinking coffee and concluded that she hadnât. Of course, by the time they always met up it was usually later in the day, so maybe that was simply a ritual she missed.
What was even more interesting, however, was the level of familiarity her best friend was showing to her motherâs husband. Former husband. Tyra barely talked to him yesterday, and now she was treating him like an old friend, or...
A lover.
âSo you cook, huh? Iâm sure mom loved that,â Sheila said.
âNah, not really. Breakfast is all I make. Well, that and hamburgers. And tea. Sometimes Ramen, if Iâm feeling really daring. But thatâs it.â
Sheila nodded as Tyra joined her at the table and plopped down next to her.
âSo, you seem chipper this morning. Good sleep last night?â Harper asked Tyra.
âYou could say that. I was out cold. That was the best sleep Iâve had in a long time.â
Harper nodded and briefly locked eyes with Sheila. There was a lot unsaid in that look, Sheila knew. They would definitely be talking later.
âHey, after we eat, I want to go through my motherâs things if thatâs OK with you,â Sheila said to Harper.
âFine with me,â Harper responded. âAfter I serve you girls Iâll be heading off to work anyway. Just call me if you need anything. You should have my number on your phone from when I called you about your mom.â
Sheila nodded again, looking back towards Tyra. She was staring at Harper with undisguised adoration. What was with her? She never acted like this towards guys, not that Sheila had seen anyway. Maybe her hormones were finally getting the better of her.
Breakfast couldnât be served quick enough. She was really looking forward to combing through her motherâs things, to see what she left behind. She had a feeling she was going to find something huge...
