“Hey. I was beginning to wonder if you girls were still alive up there,” Harper said as Sheila and Tyra made their way downstairs and into the kitchen.

Sheila smiled tiredly at her mother’s husband while Tyra bounded towards him and slung her arms around his shoulders.

“It. Smells. Delicious. Coffee?” Tyra asked Harper as he scrambled the eggs. “What? Why are you looking at me like that?” Tyra asked him, letting her hands slip from his shoulders and taking a step back.

“That’s what – you know, never mind. It’s nothing. I wasn’t sure if you guys drank coffee or not, so I didn’t make any.”

The back of Tyra’s hand flew to her forehead, and she cried out in mock anguish.

Sheila eyed the goofy show her best friend was putting on. She knew exactly what Harper was about to say: the way she asked that question sounded just like her mother – that was always the first thing she asked when someone else was doing the cooking. Sheila nodded as Tyra joined her at the table and plopped down next to her.

“So, you seem chipper this morning. Good sleep last night?” Harper asked Tyra.

“You could say that. I was out cold. That was the best sleep I’ve had in a long time.”

Harper nodded and briefly locked eyes with Sheila. There was a lot unsaid in that look, Sheila knew. They would definitely be talking later.

“Hey, after we eat, I want to go through my mother’s things if that’s OK with you,” Sheila said to Harper.

“Fine with me,” Harper responded. “After I serve you girls I’ll be heading off to work anyway. Just call me if you need anything. You should have my number on your phone from when I called you about your mom.”

Sheila nodded again, looking back towards Tyra. She was staring at Harper with undisguised adoration. What was with her? She never acted like this towards guys, not that Sheila had seen anyway. Maybe her hormones were finally getting the better of her.

Breakfast couldn’t be served quick enough. She was really looking forward to combing through her mother’s things, to see what she left behind. She had a feeling she was going to find something huge...
